Footwear to aid in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers.
The Diabetic Boot Company (DBC) needed a company to design and manufacture footwear to aid in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. DBC approached Morgan with an initial concept and prototype. This initial work was taken on by the R&D department, and then further developed and refined for manufacturing.
The concept behind the design is twofold;
To more evenly spread weight and pressure (called offloading), to reduce further damage
Periodic inflation of an air-bladder under the arch of the foot, helps to maintain sufficient blood flow for the body’s healing processes. (Peripheral blood flow can otherwise be limited in diabetics.)
Offloading devices and diabetic footwear are well established, but the mechanism for inflating an air bladder needed to be designed from scratch. The housing for which is sculpted in shape, so it can be concealed under trousers for less obtrusive treatment.
