MIAT Prize Overview and Criteria

Introduction

In order to celebrate its 30th anniversary, MIAT has created The Morgan Innovation & Technology Prize (The Prize) to further help UK innovators and inventors to bring their products to market.

The Prize

The Prize will consist of R&D services provided by Morgan Innovation & Technology Ltd to the value of £32,000. The exact nature of the services will depend on the winning product and what services are most needed to help bring the winning product to market but can include: research; design; prototyping; manufacturing; testing and certification. The winning entry will also receive a physical trophy as a keepsake.
In addition, Moore Barlow are providing £1,000 worth of commercial legal advice to the winner to be used within 1 year of the prize being awarded, subject to the following criteria:

  • satisfactory identity and anti-money laundering checks
  • our standard terms of business would apply
  • expenses or disbursements are excluded (e.g. official fees to register a trade mark or file a patent or trade mark/patent attorney fees)
  • excludes other legal disciplines such as corporate, employment, property work

This is approximately 12 hours of work at a junior solicitor level or 7 hours of work at a partner level and could cover brand strategy advice, non-disclosure agreements, privacy policy, online (i.e. website) or offline terms and conditions or third party supply agreements.

Entrance Criteria

The Prize is open to any entrants who are over 18 and have a product or idea for a product that they are seeking to bring to market. Products at all stages of development will be considered. Entries must be made via the online application form by the published closing date. Entries are free of charge.

Prize Timetable

The Prize will be awarded in accordance with the following timetable:
January 1st 2020 – opening date for entries
February 29th 2020 – closing date for entries
March 30th – shortlisted products announced
April 30th 2020 – winner announced

Judging Criteria

The Morgan Innovation & Technology judging panel will decide the winning entry based on the following criteria:

  1. Which product they believe will have the biggest potential impact – the impact could be commercial, social, educational or welfare related.
  2. Which product they feel will make best use of the Prize for development purposes.
  3. Which product they feel is most commercially viable.

Shortlisted entries will be required to meet with the judging panel to answer questions and / or demonstrate their product.

General Terms

  1. Only 1 entry allowed per product
  2. Entrants accept the judges’ decision as final
  3. Shortlisted entrants may be referenced in promotional materials and their contact details shared with our partners
  4. All submission materials marked ‘confidential’ will be subject to our standard NDA
  5. The winner will be expected to attend a prize giving ceremony in London
  6. The £32,000 R&D prize will be in the form of a credit note for services and has no cash value.
